Strathyre is located in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and is approximately 25 miles north of Stirling, 50 miles north of Glasgow and 47 miles west of Perth. The village is a popular destination with tourists and outdoors enthusiasts with a wide range of activities on offer and holiday accommodation located nearby. Strathyre is a district and settlement in the Stirling local government district of Scotland. It forms the south-eastern part of the parish of Balquhidder and was, prior to the 1973 reorganisation of local government, part of Perthshire. It is within the bounds of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Strathyre's name comes from the Gaelic Strath Cor, interpreted as 'broad winding valley', which describes the surrounding landscape perfectly. Start exploring the quiet wooded glen from the car park (Forestry and Land Scotland) and picnic site in the village or head for the southern end of tranquil Loch Lubnaig to find trails at Ben Ledi and the Strathyre Cabins. This area is steeped in Scottish history and many stories abound, especially of Rob Roy MacGregor, notorious 18th century outlaw and local legend. Visit his grave at the peaceful kirkyard at Balquhidder.
